Djenne Overnight Tour from Segou

A true treasure of Mali, Djenné is an ancient town straight out of a movie set. This urban commune which sits on a spit of land created by the Bani River, an oasis of peacefulness surrounded by ancient Sudanese-style mud buildings. Located halfway between Bamako and Timbuktu, a few dozen miles away from the Dogon Country, Djenné makes up for a safe and wonderful visit all Mali travelers must experience.

What to Expect:

From Segou, we will travel by land to Djenné for about 5 - 6 hours then board a ferry that will take you to the old town. The ferry, an experience in itself, is manned by a bunch of accommodating and friendly staff. Upon arrival in Djenné, visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Grand Mosque, the biggest dried mud building in the world. In front of this building is a large square that turns into a market every Monday, where locals from different corners of Mali gather to sell, buy, and exchange local produce, art pieces, animals, and so much more.

A center dedicated to the preservation of old manuscripts can also be found in the town. A number of locals have made it their mission to preserve every scroll, parchment, and books they can put their hands on. Aside from these, the famous shrine of a young girl who was sacrificed to save the town from a disaster will also be visited.

We will stay at a basic accommodation in Djenné and return to Segou the next day after breakfast.

“We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have been in such capable hands for the 10 days – we have travelled extensively and done many private tours at exotic destinations, but none have matched the impeccability of this particular tour. I want to congratulate Karen for her professionalism in all her dealings with us and for Ogomono who was a standout in his own right. The memories of Mali and the fun time we had will always be treasured thanks to Ogomono”
